BIG LEAP joins the Circular Battery Cluster, strengthening EU collaboration on second-life batteries
Bigleap2026-05-13T11:19:10+00:00We are pleased to announce that BIG LEAP has officially joined the Circular Battery Cluster, a community of Horizon Europe projects committed to advancing circularity, interoperability and second-life applications across the European battery value chain.
By joining the Cluster, BIG LEAP becomes part of a growing network of EU-funded initiatives working towards a common goal: making batteries more sustainable, more reliable, and easier to reuse. The collaboration will create new opportunities to share knowledge, align methodologies, amplify dissemination, and accelerate the uptake of second-life Battery Energy Storage Systems (SL-BESS) in Europe.
A natural fit for BIG LEAP
BIG LEAP is dedicated to overcoming the barriers that today prevent the smooth reuse of old batteries in stationary energy storage. By developing the next generation of Battery Management Systems (BMS) and a cloud-based interoperable architecture, the project supports the safe, efficient and scalable integration of second-life batteries into Europe’s energy system.
Joining the Circular Battery Cluster reinforces this mission. It places BIG LEAP within a peer community of projects tackling complementary challenges, from modular battery design to advanced diagnostics, and opens the door to coordinated outreach activities, joint workshops and shared scientific results.
Working alongside REBORN and BATTERY2LIFE
Within the Cluster, BIG LEAP joins two sister projects that share a strong focus on second-life battery applications:
- REBORN develops modular battery packs and advanced BMS for safe, efficient and adaptable second-life use, with five European pilot sites validating scalability and market readiness.
- BATTERY2LIFE facilitates the smooth transition of EV batteries into second-life applications by introducing open, adaptable BMS architectures and improved system designs for reliable reconfiguration.
Together, the three projects bring complementary expertise across BMS development, system design, diagnostics, and pilot demonstrations, forming a powerful foundation for cross-project collaboration under the Batt4EU Partnership.
“Clustering is at the heart of how BIG LEAP delivers impact beyond its consortium. Joining the Circular Battery Cluster alongside REBORN and BATTERY2LIFE means we can speak with a louder, more coherent voice on second-life batteries, and turn shared challenges into shared solutions for Europe.” — BIG LEAP project team
What comes next
The Cluster will serve as a platform for joint dissemination activities, technical exchanges, and policy outreach over the coming months. BIG LEAP will contribute actively to these efforts, ensuring that the project’s results, from interoperable BMS architectures to second-life integration use cases, reach the widest possible audience of researchers, industry players, and policymakers.
