BIG LEAP Project at Renpower Maghreb 2025
Bigleap2025-12-10T08:16:29+00:00The BIG LEAP project was highlighted at Renpower Maghreb 2025 during a panel dedicated to the rapid growth of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and Energy Storage Systems (ESS) in Tunisia. The session, titled “Key Drivers for BESS and ESS Growth in Tunisia: Government Targets, Technological Advancements and Investment Opportunities,” took place in Tunis and brought together leading voices from the region’s energy transition landscape.
The panel explored how Tunisia’s ambitious renewable energy targets are accelerating demand for advanced storage solutions, from large-scale BESS supporting grid stability to distributed systems enhancing energy resilience for homes, industries, and commercial users. Speakers addressed technological progress, regulatory developments, and the investment momentum shaping Tunisia’s evolving storage market.
Representing RES4Africa, Paolo Cutrone presented BIG LEAP as one of the Foundation’s flagship Horizon Europe research and innovation initiatives with strong potential for replication in African contexts. He highlighted how the project is advancing battery circularity by developing a three-layer Battery Management System (BMS) capable of ensuring the safe and reliable integration of second-life batteries.
By enabling the reuse of batteries while maintaining performance and safety, BIG LEAP supports more sustainable, cost-effective and scalable energy storage deployment, an important driver for regions facing rising energy demand and increasing integration of renewables.
Participation in Renpower Maghreb reinforced the relevance of BIG LEAP’s results not only for Europe, but also for partner regions seeking affordable, reliable, and sustainable storage solutions to support their clean energy transition.
