Building the Future of Second-Life Energy Storage in Europe
Bigleap2026-02-27T14:29:57+00:00Europe’s transition toward a circular, resilient and high-performance battery ecosystem depends on the ability to extend the life of battery systems beyond their first use. As electric mobility accelerates and energy storage becomes central to the continent’s decarbonisation strategy, second-life solutions are emerging as a key enabler of sustainability, resource efficiency and technological sovereignty.
To advance this shared mission, BIG LEAP, BATTERY2LIFE and REBORN are joining forces for a joint technical webinar on 18 March 2026, bringing together leading experts working on the next generation of tools, algorithms and design approaches for second-life battery applications.
What can participants expect?
The webinar will be led by researchers and technical leaders from the three EU-funded projects, each bringing specialised expertise to the second-life battery landscape:
- Sazzad Hosen (VUB) – Research Professor and session host, framing the system‑level challenges and opportunities for second‑life deployment.
- George Konstantinidis (ICCS, BATTERY2LIFE) – Presenting advances in cloud‑based BMS and digital passports that support traceability and safe repurposing.
- Josu Olmos (IKERLAN, Big LEAP) – Introducing new approaches to SoX and RUL algorithms and interoperable cloud‑layer BMS development.
- Andy Roux (CEA, REBORN) – Showcasing solderless and easily dismantlable module designs that simplify preparation for second‑life applications.
Following the presentations, a joint round table will bring all speakers together to discuss interoperability, system‑design challenges and the practical steps needed to scale second‑life solutions across Europe.
