RES4Africa to Host Conference in Rabat: ‘Shaping a Future-Proof Energy System for Morocco’
RES4Africa Foundation, a partner in the BIG LEAP project, is organising the high-level conference Shaping a Future-Proof Energy System in Morocco. The event will take place on October 14th, 2024, at the Sofitel Jardin des Roses in Rabat, from 09:00 to 14:30 (UTC+1). As part of this initiative, partners like Masen, who are also involved in the BIG LEAP project, will be present at the event.
The conference aims to bring together government officials, private sector leaders, and international experts to discuss strategies for accelerating Morocco’s renewable energy transition. This dialogue aligns with the country’s ambitious goals of increasing renewable energy capacity and securing its position as a leader in the global energy landscape.
Over the past decade, Morocco has made remarkable strides in its energy transition, achieving a 20% share of renewables by 2020 and setting ambitious targets for 52% of installed capacity by 2030. The country’s ultimate vision, outlined in its Low Carbon Strategy, is to reach 80% renewable energy in its energy mix by 2050. Additionally, Morocco’s Green Hydrogen Offer (“Offre Maroc”) positions it as a frontrunner in the global green hydrogen economy with an incentive-driven, holistic approach.
However, these ambitions come with significant challenges, including water scarcity, food security concerns, and land degradation—issues intensified by climate change that have direct implications for the energy sector. The conference will tackle these obstacles and explore pathways to ensure Morocco’s energy independence, competitiveness, and affordability while maintaining its commitment to a sustainable green transition.
The event will also showcase RES4Africa’s ongoing efforts in Morocco, including the First Executive School on Renewable Energies and Energy Transition, developed in partnership with the University Mohamed VI Polytechnic. This initiative is part of broader cooperation between Italy and Africa, aligned with the Italian government’s Strategic Mattei Plan, which supports the continent’s energy transition. Additionally, the conference will introduce RAISEMorocco, an accelerator program designed to empower innovative startups and entrepreneurs in Morocco’s renewable energy sector.
