What Are Second-Life Batteries and Why Are They Key to Europe’s Energy Future?
As Europe takes bold steps toward climate neutrality and energy independence, the focus on sustainable battery solutions has never been more urgent. Among the most promising innovations? Second-Life Batteries (SLBs).
But what exactly are SLBs and why do they matter?
A Second Life with a Powerful Purpose
After a battery has completed its first life in an electric vehicle (EV), it typically retains 70–80% of its original capacity. While no longer suitable for EV performance, these batteries still have immense potential in stationary energy storage applications. That’s where Second-Life Batteries come into play.
By repurposing these batteries instead of recycling them immediately, SLBs offer a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to support:
- – Grid flexibility
- – Residential or commercial energy storage
- – Renewable energy integration
- – Charging infrastructure for EVs
Circular Economy in Action
SLBs are a cornerstone of the circular economy model, extending battery lifecycles, reducing electronic waste, and making better use of raw materials. They also offer a way to decrease the carbon footprint and economic cost associated with manufacturing new batteries.
In short: SLBs are not just a technical innovation, they are a systemic shift in how we produce, use, and reuse energy technologies.
Enter the BIG LEAP Project
While the potential of SLBs is huge, challenges remain. Safety, performance, and predictability must be guaranteed before these batteries can be deployed at scale.
This is where the BIG LEAP project steps in.
Co-funded by Horizon Europe, BIG LEAP is working to optimize the performance, safety, and reliability of SLBsthrough the development of a three-level Battery Management System (BMS). This unique approach enhances control, monitoring, and predictive capabilities, ensuring SLBs can operate effectively in real-world conditions.
BIG LEAP also aims to:
- – Boost the interoperability of Battery Management Systems
- – Validate second-life use cases in real applications
- – Strengthen the circular value chain of batteries in Europe
Smart, Sustainable, and Scalable
By developing smart and modular solutions for SLB deployment, BIG LEAP supports Europe’s transition to a clean, secure, and affordable energy future. Whether it’s supporting grid resilience, integrating renewables, or powering off-grid systems, SLBs will play a central role in Europe’s energy ecosystem in the years ahead.
